Huge sinkhole in GuatemalaOn first sight it appears Silver Surfer has visited the Guatemala City residents.  Youtube is already getting its share of UFO, government conspiracies, and other amusing ideas.  The sinkhole appeared after the powerful Tropical Storm Agatha  came off the Pacific Ocean and went thru the area over the weekend.  Total casualties of this storm are at 115 people.  So far from early reports no fatalities were caused by the sinkhole itself.

This photo has been posted by the Guatemalan Governement on thier Flickr Feed showing the hundimiento” (spontaneous sinkhole).  This sinkhole is so big it engulfs a three story building and a house.  The total street level size is larger than a street intersection.  There are no reports of exactly how deep this sinkhole is at this time.

Guatemala SinkholeAccording to scientists, this spontaneous effect happens from time to time during major storms caused by the removal of soil by water.  Usually this starts slow but sometimes the ground can just crack open such as this case.  The area could expect another four days of rain which could weaken the area even more.

As if this wasn't enough, the Pacaya volcano located 50 kilometers south of Guatemala City erupted on Friday spewing ash in the areas of Amatitlán, Villa Nueva, and Guatemala City.    President Álvaro Colom's government has decreed a State of Public Calamity in the Escuintla, Sacatepéquez and Guatemala departments, for 15 days or more, so the authorities can do their job correctly.
